The best fabrics for sacrificial use are Sunbrella and 4oz Insignia UV Dacron. The Dacron is much lighter than the Sunbrella so it is a good choice for boats under 30 feet or so, but Sunbrella has unparalleled durability in sunlight which makes it the most common choice.
The sacrificial strip should be wide enough to span the gap between the edge of the sail as it is rolled onto the forestay plus about 6 inches (to allow for sloppy furling). If the sail is not available for measurement in its furled state, the table below can be used to determine width.
