Painting on Glen Raven Sunbrella Canvas With Action Art

1. Assemble the following materials: an appropriate amount of Action Art stencil material, a paintbrush (a 2 inch stiff bristled brush is ideal) or a roller, a small artist's brush, a brand name top quality 100% acrylic non-chalking exterior semi-gloss paint, a craft knife, a 3 speed 20" box fan, and a squeegee (the squeegee is helpful but is not absolutely necessary).

2. Draw your design onto the stenciling material and cut it away with the craft knife. We have cut out the number 9.

3. Remove the paper backing and apply the sticky backed stenciling mask directly to the fabric (works great on Duo Print banner material and acrylic fabrics like Glen Raven Sunbrella). Here is where a squeegee helps in smoothing the mask onto the fabric or just use your hands. It is very important that the edges of the mask are firmly adhered to the fabric with no wrinkles or air bubbles which would allow paint to seep under the mask's edge. Work on a table or other solid surface to help prevent this from happening. High humidity or damp fabric will hinder the mask's ability to adhere to the fabric. A dehumidifier will help in these conditions.

4. In the cut away design area apply two coats of paint close in color to the fabric. This is done to prevent bleed through of the finish color onto the other side of the fabric. It is especially important when working with a light fabric and a dark finish paint. When stenciling on a dark fabric use black paint for a base coat.

5. After the base coats are thoroughly dry, remove unwanted roughness by lightly sanding the area with a low grit sandpaper. Brush away any dust particles for a smoother finish.

6. Now apply one or more coats of the desired finish color. After each paint application dry the paint with a high speed fan. This is a must between coats and will produce a much nicer looking graphic.
