Binder Attachment Instructions

Two different styles of binders are available. One is stationary and must be removed to continue normal sewing. The other is a “swing away” style that can be left attached to the machine at all times. Simply swing it into position when your project requires binding a fabric edge. Two binder sizes are available. One is used with 3/4" binding tape and the other with 1" binding tape. The 1” binder will also sew a 7/8” centerfold acrylic binding.

Installing and Using the Binder

See the appropriate photo for the proper installation of each style of binder.
Note that the screw placements in the bracket slots will vary from machine to machine.
In general binders should be installed so that the “feeder ledge” (see photo “A”) is positioned as close to the right side of the feed dog slot as possible or right outside of the presser foot.

Line up the slot in the binder with the two holes in the bed of the machine (Photos B). Place a washer (single washer with two holes for the “swing away” style) on each of the attachment screws, then insert the screws into the slot and then into the holes in the bed of the machine.
Tighten the screws. Angle the binder slightly toward the presser foot before it is tightened down to better feed the binding under the foot.

For the “swing away” binders final left and right adjustment can be fine tuned by loosening the large thumb screw and sliding the binder head into position. Tighten the thumb screw when satisfied with the positioning.
The two other screws shown in each photo can be used to slide the feeder plate back and forth.
The mouth of the feeder must be very close to the feed dogs in order to keep stitch placement consistent.

On the Ultrafeed LSZ-1 position the feeder mouth right at the front edge of the needle plate slot opening.
On an Ultrafeed LS-1 position the feeder mouth just forward of the most forward position of the walking foot’s path of travel.
You may need to move the location of the screws in the plate to find the proper setting. When the binder is installed properly, rotating the sewing machine will not result in any contact between the binder, the feet, or the feed dog.

If using an Ultrafeed LSZ-1 sewing machine, set the needle position lever in the “right” side position.
This will offset the needle bar to the right side of the foot when the machine is in straight stitch mode.

Now feed the proper sized binding tape into the feeder plate as far as you can from the “wide” end of the plate.
Finish the insertion by using a screwdriver blade to pull the binding completely through the slots.

Push the raw edge of the material requiring binding into the crease of the binding as it exits the binder mouth and start sewing. As long as the material is feed tightly into the crease of the binding the result will be a perfectly finished edge.
