Watch the ATN Gale Sail Video below to see it in action. A Storm Jib comes in handy in a good blow.
The Gale Sail is like a regular Stormsail but with the addition of a luff which can be wrapped around the headsail, i.e., it is designed to be used with furling headsails.
Since it is hoisted over the furled headsail, the Gale Sail eliminates the need for a removable headstay and the dangerous job of unfurling, lowering and stashing the furled working jib in order to free up the roller furler to hoist the storm jib. Simply furl the working jib sheets down to the deck and secure, then hank the Gale Sail over the furled jib, attach the sheets and halyard, and hoist away. No modifications to the rig are needed.
