Make Your Own Courtesy and Signal Flags by Bonnie Ladell and Matthew Grant. Paperback, 64 pp., many illus.

You can save a good deal of money constructing your own flags and these two authors make the process easy. Bonnie is a live aboard cruiser who found herself in the Caribbean and in need of courtesy flags for entry into ports. Matthew is an owner of a do-it-yourself sail/canvas company and is involved in teaching boater’s how to make fabric items for their boats. Together Bonnie and Matthew have created a book that allows boaters to make the flags needed at sea.

Bonnie presents patterns for all 28 Caribbean courtesy flags and tells you not only how to make them but when and how to fly them. Matthew uses a CAD program to optimize the use of the 5 fabric colors needed to make all of the alphabet, numbers, repeaters and answering pennants and presents easy to following construction techniques.
