When using a modern reefing/furling unit, it is necessary to protect the furled sail from UV exposure. Without a cover, the furled sail will sun rot in short order—just a matter of months in warmer climates.
If the sail is in questionable condition and you plan to replace it in the near future, it may be wise to forgo a suncover and simply use a sleeve furling cover that is pulled up on an extra halyard to cover the furled sail.
This type of cover is also desirable for racing where the extra weight of the sacrificial covers can be a serious handicap.

This Sleeve Furling Cover Kit is made from Surlast with a zipper closure. The maximum diameter that it will cover is 9 inches.
