At Sailrite® we’re known for our marine, outdoor and upholstery sewing projects. But we like making fun home and craft projects too! Have you ever thought about sewing your own apron? Aprons are great for both cooking at the stove and on the patio in front of the barbecue grill. Our downloadable apron instructions include all the pattern templates and dimensions you need to sew your own apron.

This is a great project for both beginners and experienced sewers. It’s an easy afternoon DIY. This is also a great project for teaching others — especially kids — how to sew. They get to make something useful that they can use for years to come.

Sewing aprons is also a fantastic scrap buster sewing project. Each apron requires only 1 yard of fabric for the body of the apron, plus 1/4 yard for the pockets. Use a different fabric for the pockets that coordinates with the body fabric for a cute and fun style! The last thing you need for your apron is 13 feet of binding for the edges and 12 feet of webbing for the neck and waist tie.

The great thing about an apron project is you can use home garment fabric or even lightweight upholstery fabric. Some upholstery fabrics have stain-resistant properties, which would make them a great choice for an apron used for grilling or barbecuing. Our selection of webbing and binding is high-quality and great for this project.
