Use the timing set screw to adjust how close the hook point comes to the needle. This screw also can adjust the basket that holds the hook so that the needle is centered between the opening in the cap spring. If the hook is too close to the needle it will hit it, if too far it will not pick up the loop and you may get skipped stitches or shredded thread.
