When fall hits, many sailors have to start thinking about taking their boats out of the water. And that means projects to finish before the season ends. One thing you should be sure to double check before hauling out is the bunk carpet on your trailer. Holes in the carpet could scratch and damage your boat’s fiberglass hull. If the carpet needs replaced, it’s an easy DIY project that you can knock out in a day.

All you need to replace the bunk liner are stainless steel staples, staple gun, and a boat carpet material. When we replaced the liner on the trailer for our Project Boat, we used Boat Blanket Fabric as our liner material because of it’s excellent chemical, UV and mildew and mold resistance. Plus, Boat Blanket is a soft, non-woven plush material that is gentle enough for the boat’s hull.

Replacing the bunk carpeting uses a simple pull and staple technique, with no sewing required. You can install the new fabric with the boards either on or off your trailer. In the videos below, we outline both methods of fabric installation. Part one shows how to cover boards that are not installed and part two demonstrates how to cover boards on the trailer.

Now you’re all set to make this quick but important update to your trailer! What projects are you still working on before the season’s out? Share them with us in the comments!
