Fabric Backed Sew Foam is a thin sheet of high-quality, polyurethane foam that is perfect for upholstery applications. This foam, often called polyurethane foam with fabric backing, scrim foam or sew foam, features a spun-bonded polyester backing.
Description
Fabric Backed Sew Foam is a premium, thin polyurethane foam designed for a wide range of upholstery and sewing applications. Also known as scrim foam or sew foam, it features a durable spun-bonded polyester backing that adds stability and ease of use. Its flexible, lightweight construction makes it perfect for creating structured yet soft designs, such as quilted bags and purses.
Commonly used in marine upholstery, this foam provides reliable padding for hard surfaces like boat seat frames and consoles. It’s also an excellent choice for quilting projects, especially for achieving clean, professional diamond stitching on vinyl and leather.
Select yardage, foam thickness and shipped packaging preference from the drop-down menus above.
The backing is designed to hold stitches, allowing you to sew through the foam to create pleats or channeling in motorcycle seats, pontoon and powerboat seating, golf cart backrests, and coaming pads. It is not intended to replace standard cushion foam; rather, it provides padding to soften hard edges and adds texture by enabling quilted patterns to be sewn into the covering fabric. Before stitching, adhere the exposed foam side to the fabric using any polyurethane-compatible adhesive.
Nearly any polyurethane-compatible spray adhesive can also be used to bond the foam to a rigid surface, such as a boat seat base, as long as the foam will be covered with an outer fabric layer that is mechanically fastened. Use Silk Film over the foam to make it easier to pull the outer covering smoothly in place.
Fabric Backed Sew Foam is also suitable for headliner applications. To install, glue the spun-bonded side of the foam to the hull (see related items for adhesive suggestions), then attach headliner vinyl to the foam side (mechanically and/or with the same adhesive). When using a translucent or light-colored material over the foam, check to ensure the color of the foam or adhesive does not show through.
This item may come in two pieces. Color of foam may vary.
To save on shipping costs, choose "Compressed" from the "Shipped" drop-down menu above. This means the foam is folded and compressed for shipping. We recommend unrolling the foam sheet as soon as possible. Compressed foam takes up to a week to regain its original size and shape. Allow foam to fully decompress before cutting or using in a project. Even after regaining its shape, the compressed foam will have wrinkles that won’t come out. If you must have the smoothest product for your application, please purchase the "Uncompressed" foam option.
