Adding flooring to outdoor applications can provide a soft, cool foundation for your feet and allow for added traction. However, placing traditional carpet outdoors can lead to an unwanted abundance of water, mold and mildew. Vinyl flooring is a practical alternative to outdoor carpet in that it is specifically built to withstand the elements. Sailrite® carries two popular brands of vinyl flooring: Infinity and Chilewich®. This handy blog will assist you in selecting the right type of vinyl flooring as a carpet alternative.

Infinity Luxury Woven Vinyl™ Flooring is a performance-grade flooring made of 100% vinyl encased polyester on a frothed vinyl backing. It completely resists the absorption of water. In addition to being completely resistant to moisture, Infinity Luxury Woven Vinyl Flooring boasts incredible mold, mildew, fade, stain and flame resistance. This makes it easy to clean and a low-maintenance flooring for your boat, RV or home. It’s backed by a 10-year UV Fade Warranty to guarantee it lasts even in the toughest environments.

Chilewich Floor Covering is made of vinyl with a 100% thermoplastic polyolefin backing. This makes it easy to work with as it cuts easily without fraying. While this mixture may soak up a minimal amount of water, it will dry out very quickly to eliminate any chances of mold and mildew growth. Chilewich Floor Coverings also contain Microban® to further inhibit the growth of stain- and odor-causing bacteria, mold and mildew and possess great resistance to fading.

When considering whether to use Infinity or Chilewich, the general size of your desired project should be a top consideration. Here at Sailrite, Chilewich and Infinity are sold by the yard. It’s important to note that Chilewich is 72 inches wide (18 square feet per yard) whereas Infinity is 102 inches wide (25.5 square feet per yard). Infinity is reasonably larger than Chilewich, making it much less likely to show seams when used on large applications.

When it comes to using Infinity and Chilewich, both have a fantastic array of applications in both indoor and outdoor projects. These floorings are well known for their impeccable ability to provide comfort, traction and a protective barrier on boat floors. Both can be snapped in or glued down depending on your need and preference. For snap-in mats, it’s recommended that you bind the edges of the vinyl flooring with a 1.25-inch binding and use snap fasteners to secure it to the boat floor. These vinyl products can also be used as RV flooring, patio and outdoor rugs, placemats and coasters.

Both Infinity and Chilewich products are bleach (or soap and water) cleanable and made in the USA. You can always count on these products to dry quickly, clean up easily, and withstand everyday wear and tear. Between indoor and outdoor applications, Infinity and Chilewich are simple to install and stand up to the test of time. Chilewich and Infinity vary slightly in colors and weaves but retain similar neutral tones that are sure to suit any existing décor. If you need to cover a large project and don’t want a lot of seams, Infinity has a larger width and is a smarter choice in this situation. That’s because one of the main differences between Infinity and Chilewich is its width.

When pricing is considered, certain varieties of Infinity are comparable to Chilewich, but in general, Chilewich is the more economical choice. Both brands will prove incredibly useful for a variety of applications. No matter which one you choose, Sailrite has you covered with a wide selection of high-performance carpet alternatives for your next project!
