At Sailrite, we love a good challenge, and this project started with a specific one: designing a bag that could withstand "combat damage" while providing easy access to bulky items. The result is a heavy-duty side-zip tote bag that is a total game-changer. While originally designed to protect a valuable collection of gaming cards, this bag’s reinforced structure and unique side-entry zippers make it an ideal companion for a day at the beach, a picnic at the park, or as a custom storage solution for your boat or RV.

What makes this tote stand out is the "zipperified" design. By replacing standard side seams with chunky, molded tooth zippers, you can open the bag completely flat or fish items out from the very bottom without digging through the top. We’ve used a combination of EverSoft™ Vinyl for the base and Cordura® fabric for the panels, ensuring the bag is water-resistant and incredibly durable. Inside, a Boat Blanket liner provides soft, padded protection and structural rigidity without the need for complex hemming.

Key features you’ll see in the video include:

  • The Side-Zip Formula: Learn the simple math to add zippers to almost any tote pattern.

  • Heavy-Duty Reinforcement: See how we use 10 oz. Dacron sailcloth to stiffen the floor and bar tacks to ensure the handles never fail.

  • Professional Finishing: Watch how Grosgrain webbing is used as binding to hide raw edges and add a second layer of strength to the gussets.

To tackle these thick assemblies, we rely on the Sailrite® Ultrafeed® Sewing Machine. Its powerful walking foot easily handles the layers of vinyl, Cordura, and bulky zippers. We also share some of our favorite shop secrets, like using SewReady™ Seamstick Basting Tape to hold zippers in place and the Magnetic Sewing Guide to keep those long top-hem stitches perfectly straight.

Whether you are an industrious beginner or a seasoned pro, this video provides a step-by-step roadmap to creating a professional-grade bag. If you enjoy this build, be sure to check out our other bag-making tutorials, including our popular series on duffels and backpacks.
