Knowing how much foam you need for your cushion project is step one to a successful DIY. Luckily, we've made it easy for you. The Sailrite® Foam Nesting Calculator helps you determine how many sheets of foam you need to order for your cushions. We sell foam in various sheet sizes, so the Foam Calculator will help you map out how to cut the foam in order to maximize efficiency, reduce waste and save money.

The Sailrite Foam Calculator is the only foam nesting calculator in the world — and it's a free resource available to everyone. Let's learn more about this incredibly useful tool and why you should use it for your cushion projects. At the end of this blog, watch the demo video to learn more about the calculator and how to use it.

When using the calculator, the first step is to select which type of Sailrite® CushionRite® foam you need for your project. You can choose from Premium (high density) or Standard (medium density) polyurethane foam, Dry Fast foam or Flotation (also called closed cell) foam.

If you're not sure which type of foam you need for your project, you can search "foam" on the Sailrite website and sort the results by the "Foam Use" facet on the left-hand side of the webpage. Select from popular foam projects, including cockpit cushions, pontoon seats, automotive seating, home décor cushions, patio cushions and more. We also have a great blog, "Selecting the Right Upholstery Foam" (#300057XHT), that will help you determine the right foam for your DIY.

Once you've selected your foam type on the calculator, you'll be prompted to input your cushion dimensions. You can add as many cushions as you need. Drag the cushion shapes around the grid that represents the foam sheet, fitting and nesting them together. Even if you have an irregularly shaped cushion — such as a keystone v-berth cushion for a boat cabin — as well as several rectangular cushions, the calculator will let you rotate, flip or slice the cushions in half to fit the pieces together as efficiently as possible. Once you have your cushion shapes placed as efficiently as possible on the grid, you'll know what size of foam sheet to order.
