Description

Fiebing’s LeatherColors® is a water-based dye that permanently changes the color of leather items. It is a true dye, meaning that it soaks into leather instead of just painting the surface. This dye comes in a variety of colors that can be applied as-is or mixed to create unique custom shades. For less intense color, dilute with water. LeatherColors dries to a matte finish.

Looking for a safe, eco-friendly dye that your whole family can use? Try LeatherColors! Since it’s water-based, LeatherColors is nonflammable and doesn’t have shipping restrictions like a traditional alcohol-based leather dye. LeatherColors also gives off fewer Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) than an alcohol-based dye, so it’s better for the environment. And the dye is nontoxic, making it a good choice for kids’ craft projects. LeatherColors is safe for use in schools, hospitals, nursing homes and prisons.

Use LeatherColors to dye leather surfaces, not to color or finish leather edges. This product is for natural vegetable tanned leathers; it will not work on suede or synthetic leathers. Use a wool dauber, sponge, rag or artist’s brush to apply LeatherColors to purses, belts, shoes and boots, saddles and harnesses, and other natural leather items.

Directions:

Follow these instructions to dye a leather piece for the first time or to re-dye a piece that has been dyed before.

1. Put on disposable gloves to avoid staining your skin with LeatherColors. Cover your worktable with a mat or other sacrificial surface to protect it from stains.

2. Since all leathers take dye differently, do a test on a scrap piece of the leather you plan to dye. Tweak your color saturation and application method as desired based on this test. Repeat the test on more scrap leather as needed.

3. Once you are finished testing, thoroughly clean the leather item to be dyed. Shake the LeatherColors bottle to mix.

4. Once the leather surface is clean, use a wool dauber, sponge or rag to apply LeatherColors in a circular motion. For detail work, use an artist’s brush. Apply the dye evenly over the entire surface. If applying dye to an upholstery item with foam padding, take care not to oversaturate the leather, as the dye may soak into the foam and cause it to bleed.

5. If the finish is not deep enough, add a second coat before allowing the item to dry.

6. LeatherColors takes 24 hours to dry completely. Once the dyed item is fully dry, buff it with a clean, soft cloth to remove any dye that did not soak into the leather.

7. Seal the leather piece with a light coat of a Fiebing’s finishing product such as Resolene®, Leather Sheen or Bag-Kote.

8. Allow the finish to dry fully before using or wearing the dyed leather item.
