Description

What Is Waxed Canvas?

As a long-lasting alternative to leather, waxed canvas is a heavy-duty, dyed cotton fabric created using a plain weave. In the days before Dacron® and synthetic sail material, waxed canvas was originally used by sailors due to its incredible durability, water resistance and ability to catch the wind better than unwaxed canvas. Today, waxed canvas is made using natural wax coatings.

This heavy waxed canvas is coated in a premium beeswax for optimal performance. The beeswax coating is heavier, making this canvas stiffer than our paraffin-coated canvas.

Because of its wax coating, this canvas will patina beautifully when it is folded, scratched or scuffed, creating a rich, rugged look. This means you will be able to see the marks made in the fabric as they will appear lighter than the original fabric color. This gives a more unique, craftsman-inspired look to many projects. Like a full grain leather, waxed canvas looks better with age and wear!

What Can I Use Waxed Canvas For?

For a rugged, fashionable look on your next project that gets more attractive with use, choose waxed canvas. We recommend this product for:

  • Tote bags
  • Backpacks
  • Tool bags
  • Utility bags
  • Packs
  • Purses
  • Messenger bags
  • Duffle bags
  • Briefcases
  • Jackets
  • Aprons
  • And much more!

Why Use Waxed Canvas?

Waxed canvas is highly water resistant, nearly waterproof. Water will roll right off this fabric, but if it is immersed in water for long periods of time it will become saturated. If the wax coating wears off over time it can be easily reapplied to restore water resistance. The unique look of this canvas is highly complemented by metal hardware (such as zippers and rivets) and leather accents.

If you want to remove marks or scuffs in your waxed canvas, you can apply a hair dryer to the area. This will melt the wax and remove any marks, but it will also compromise the wax coating and you will need to retreat the area to restore water resistance. If you notice water is beginning to saturate your waxed canvas more easily, you’ll want to reapply the wax coating. If properly maintained, this canvas will last generations and still look great.

Special Attributes:
