With just a few tools and materials, you can bring extra comfort to any living space. Make cushions to soften hard dining chairs and warm up boring office waiting areas. Or, use them as fun floor cushions in a kids’ playroom or classroom. The list of possible uses is endless! Let’s dive into this beginner upholstery DIY.

The Quick and Easy method is one of the simplest ways to make a square-cornered cushion. This tutorial video is also the first in our Cushion Masterclass series. The seven tutorials in this series will teach you different ways to build a cushion. It’s an easy and fun way to add contemporary upholstery fabrics to your décor.

The Quick and Easy Box Cushion is made from one piece of decorative upholstery fabric and one piece of cushion underlining material. The decorative fabric becomes the top and sides of the cushion, while the underlining goes on the bottom. This is the method for you if you want a simple cushion with these features:

  • Automatic pattern matching from front to back.
  • No separate boxing pieces.
  • Seamed corners and rolled edges.
  • Zipper on the underside.
  • No piping.
With seamed corners (left) and a zipper on the underside (right), this no-frills cushion boasts a smooth appearance.

Like the name says, this cushion couldn’t be easier to make. It also doesn’t take long to make a single cushion, so you can DIY several of these seats in a day!
