How to Make a Duffle Bag - DIY
Purchase a Duffle Bag kit from Sailrite and watch this video to complete a versatile and attractive duffle bag that you will love. This is a great kit for new sewers and owners of Sailrite sewing machines. You will put into practice and learn many of the skills that are typically required for upholstery and canvas applications. Not only will you learn a lot, but you will be left with a great looking duffle bag!
This was a fun project to get started with sewing. Take your time, follow the video (over and over again) and it will come out perfect. If I could only suggest 1 thing, reading instructions might be easier. Having to rewind to “what did he say” was frustrating but all in all it was fun. Bonus, you get some left over parts to for another project.
Always great products.
The bag showed up in a timely manner. I have made one bag before and will be giving this bag as a Christmas gift.
Great duffle bag kit !
I have a canvas duffle I have used for the last 35 years, and it has become ragged. I had planned to design and sew a new canvas duffle for some time, when I saw this kit from Sailrite. I made the kit and it is just perfect replacement for my over-night sailing bag. The canvas product is synthetic and cuts like butter with the hot knife. I was planning on a round cylinder, this one is a square cube but it may in fact fit more clothes and travel items as a cube. The measurements all worked out perfectly and the corners came together as designed. I look forward to using the internal hook to keep my keys from getting lost inside. I did elect to change out the plastic D ring and strap snap hook for a metal D ring and hook. While I have sewed for many years, and have built a bimini, several mainsail covers, a genoa and a mainsail, this kit would be good for a beginner to get the techniques of sewing your own canvas projects. Be sure to put your 3/8 seamstick right up on the edge of the fabric, and then sew the 1/2 seam on the mark or a tad on the wide side so you never see seamstick poking out of the seam on the finished side, so you have a totally professional looking end result. The video was extremely detailed and accurate and takes you step by step. I just put my laptop beside my sewing machine and watched a step, then paused the video and did it. The final seam with the end-top, the zipper, and the D ring as one assembly is the most fiddly of the whole project, but not a problem. Enjoy it! Nice for gifts too.
I had just made the round Sailrite duffle and loved the experience..and I wanted to love this one too. I really struggled with getting this cut out. You need a VERY large space to do your cutting. The canvas they give you is not cut straight on the sides..so just getting a straight edge on a 60” piece of fabric was challenging. I had to cut the 49.5” piece twice and it still didn’t come out right..now I can’t make the bag unless I purchase another yard of fabric. I even laid it on the floor on top of three cutting mats..but still didn’t have a long enough cutting surface and doing it in stages was tough cuz the fabric is so thick and slippery. Also this kit includes hem bobs, which made me think it had the thread as well..the round duffle did..but alas I have to now go back and order the thread. Why include the hem bobs? I now have to buy the same thread to match them anyway. All that said, the quality of the materials is great and I’m sure the project itself will be easy enough once I’m able to get some more fabric to try again. Hate having to spend another $15 on shipping tho so it’ll prob have to be put on the back burner sadly. And I would kill for some written instructions on these things..you go to scroll on the video and it jumps you way forward only to have to scroll back and forth looking for your place. Makes everything take twice as long I feel..but I digress. If you’re looking for an easier beginner kit I suggest the round duffle..it has the pattern marked on the fabric and is a smaller project with a fabric that is easy to work with. It includes literally everything you need to complete the project and still comes out looking very professional. All criticisms aside..Sailrite is the best!! I’m so happy to have stumbled on their site. My new LSZ -1 machine changed my whole sewing game. thanks guys :)
The kit arrived without directions on how to build it. Now I will need to look at the video again and again to figure it out. This can be done but was unexpected.
