Sew it yourself! Sail Cover Kit for Booms to 16' lets you make your own mainsail cover. Cover and protect your mainsail when flaked with this throated sail cover. The sail cover fastens under the boom with Twist-Lock fasteners with a snap button finish to provide a clean look and reduce chafe. Secure the cover around the mast with a marine zipper. This sail cover pattern features pre-plotted, long-lasting Sunbrella fabric for easy construction. Approximate construction time is 4 hours.
To determine which sail cover kit is right for your boat, measure the length of the boom (dimension "E") from the mast to its end (not including the mast width). Choose the kit with a length equal to or greater than the length of your boom.
Note: Maximum Boom Length - 16 Feet
Lazy Jack Slits: The mainsail cover pattern instructions include directions for creating lazy jack slits. If required, order an additional 6 feet of 1" acrylic binding tape (or make your own binding using any left-over scrap Sunbrella from the kit) and 3 to 4 Twist-Lock fasteners for each slit. Ordering 1 square foot of 2-3oz. leather should accommodate up to 8 slits.

How to make your own sail cover for your mainsail using a Sailrite Sail Cover kit.
Use Sailrite's kit for easy professional results.
I love Sailrite. I was sooo nervous to do this sail cover as my very first heavy marine project, but this kit made it easy. The instructions are excellent, and I was even able to customized it a bit by using grommets and an extra "tongue" of material for the throated closure at the mast instead of the zipper thanks to the techniques Sailrite taught me in this kit. I have already been highly recommending it to others. NOTE: My machine is a 1922 Singer hand crank.
a little lost
My novice sewer found the directions unclear. He has never basted anything before. May I suggest a few simple explanations for those that are new to sewing. The length of the produce makes this challenging as well. Hoping for the best, we are on day one of this project....
Had to do a few modifications for my boat but ended up looking amazing probably better than the one I hade done by a professional
Very nice kit
Beautiful, high quality mainsail cover
OK, so I don't have a commercial sewing machine but a very nice Singer and my only issue was when sewing multiple layers of fabric for which I used a walking foot and worked slowly. But that was only because of the high quality, marine grade, Sunbrella fabric that came with this kit. This sail cover should last forever! And everything you need is included with the kit. As well as instructions and the on-line videos which were so very helpful. Because they provide enough fabric for any adjustments you might have to make for your particular style of sailboat, I was able to customize my cover accordingly. Now that I've done one, I'm ready for another ;) Also, their customer service is outstanding! Thank you, Sailrite!
The thread color should be specified on the website description. I had assumed it would be the same as the fabric but it was white. Sailrite refused to exchange it, making me buy — and ship — thread in the correct color.
Sailrite lists the inclusion of V-92 White UV Polyester Thread with this kit. As there are numerous fabric color choices, this is the best option to coordinate.
